Whittier Christian rebounded from their first loss of the season Tuesday evening with a 59-36 victory over the Wilson Wildcats in the final pool play game in the La Habra Highlander Tournament. After building a 4 point lead in the 1st quarter, the Heralds turned up the defensive pressure in the 2nd stanza and outscored the Wildcats 20 to 4. Point guard Joleen Corona continued to lead the Heralds offense with a team high 16 points and 6 assists (also a team high). Hot shooting center Clairessa Watkins made 5 of of her 6 field goal attempts and reached double figures with 10 points to go along with her team high 7 rebounds. Forward Amaya Norris made her presence felt on the boards by also grabbing a team high 7 rebounds while playing a key role in the 2nd quarter defensive effort. Guard Skylar Sherfey’s defensive presence led her to a team high 4 steals while going 4 of 4 at the free throw and finishing with 7 points. Also hot shooting tonight were center Jamee Joseph who went 3 for 3 from the field to score 6 points and guard Emma Eaton who hit 2 of her 3 attempts from behind the three point line to also finish with 6 points. The Lady Heralds improve to 5-1 overall and will play for third place Friday night at 6:00 pm against the winner of tonight’s matchup between La Mirada and La Habra.
