The visiting Lady Heralds overcame a slow offensive 1st quarter and earned a 43-39 win over the La Serna Lancers. The Heralds’ defense helped them maintain a lead through the first three quarters of the game. However early in the 4th quarter, Whittier Christian found themselves down 27-31. Junior Emma Eaton helped change the momentum with some timely steals that resulted in her getting to the foul line 6 consecutive times to knot the score at 31-31. The Heralds then found themselves down 31-34 after a La Serna freethrow and field goal. Sophomore Aidan Sherfey made 2 freethrows to bring the Heralds within 1. After a defensive stop, Eaton drilled a 3 pointer to give WC a 36-34 lead that they never relinquished. Senior Shelly Vasquez hit two freethrows to expand the Heralds lead to 40-34. The Lancers’ scored a 3 pointer to make the score 41-39. For the 2nd game in a row,
A. Sherfey was fouled with under 10 seconds to go and made both freethrows to help seal the victory.
Vasquez led the Heralds in scoring with 15 points and went 4 of 5 from the foul line. Eaton finished the evening with 13 points scoring 8 of them in the 4th quarter. Senior Amaya Norris had a team high 9 boards, scored 5 points and had 2 steals.
The Lady Heralds are now 17-1 for the season as they begin Olympic league play next week. The Heralds host the Village Christian Crusaders at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, January 8th.
