With a balanced scoring attack by nine players and another outstanding defensive effort, Whittier Christian pulled away from the Burros of Ridgcrest in the second half to earn a
72-35 victory in the opening round of pool play in the La Habra Highlanders Tournament. Sophomore Hailey Gainer, who had been sidelined with an injury, saw her first action of the season and went 2-4 from the field to score 4 points. Sophomore Emma Eaton scored 6 points by going 2 of 3 from behind the three point line. The Heralds had three players reach double figures. Junior Joleen Corona once again led the scoring with 15 points while dishing out a team high 5 assists. Junior Skylar Sherfey went 4 of 5 from the field to tally 14 points to go along with 3 assists, and 3 steals. Freshman Aidan Sherfey went 4 of 7 from the field to score 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Junior Shelly Vasquez had a team high 5 steals on defense and hit both of her three point attempts to score 6 points. Senior Jamee Joseph had a team high 6 rebounds while scoring 4 points on 2 of 3 field goal attempts. Senior Clairessa Watkins had a team high 3 blocked shots and went 4 of 8 from the field to score 8 points. The Lady Heralds improve to 4-0 for the season and their next game is against the undefeated Arcadia High Apaches (7-0) Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm at La Habra High.
