If you follow local girls volleyball in the Whittier/La Habra area, then you’ll know that Whittier Christian and La Serna have two very good programs that have emerged into a seriously contested rivalry. Five set matches are no stranger to both schools and the girls that compete year in and year out. So tonight if you happened to be at La Serna, you would have seen another epic battle.
WC came out early and strong winning the first two sets and needing just one more to wrap up a victory. La Serna had other ideas. The final three sets went back and forth with both teams battling from the service line, in serve receive and in offensive execution. WCHS struggled at times to figure out La Serna’s serve and looked out of sync. La Serna struggled to stop the Heralds attack and had to scramble often.
In the end, the Lancers made a few more plays and defeated the Heralds 17-15 in the 5th.
WC was led by Makena Morrison with 27 kills and 2 blocks, followed by Haden Bones with 13 kills and 3 aces. Tiffany Ta added 4 kills and Haley Gainer had 2 big blocks.
