Capping off a perfect opening week of play for the 2019 season, Whittier Christian Girls Volleyball went into Saturdays Gold Bracket play having to win three in a row to take the crown.
In the Quarter Finals the Heralds played Montclair, easily handling them 25-14, 25-10. In their biggest test of the tournament, in what was a hotly contested match, the ladies of WCHS battled against a very good and physical San Dimas team. For the second year in a row at this tournament, the Saints and Heralds met to determine who would go on to the finals. It did not disappoint. Whittier Christian came out strong in the first, taking a big lead, seeing it drift away, but in the end winning going away 25-20. Set two saw the Saints take an early lead, but the Heralds never felt like they were out of it. Timely serving and attacking got the Heralds a sweet come from behind victory 27-26 (cap at 27).
On the other side of the bracket, West Covina took care of business to set up a great finals for the championship. Playing on center court WCHS carried their momentum to a 25-20 first set win. In the second set however, West Covina stormed back with incredible defensive grit, to edge the Heralds 19-25. It came down to a third set for the hardware. WCHS turned to its defense, serving game and contributions from everyone to pull out the 15-8, no doubt victory!!
Tournament MVP was Makena Morrison. All-Tournament team consisted of Haden Bones – Outside Hitter; Clare Jordan and Giselle Ramirez – Setters; Grace Ford – Middle Blocker; Lauren Altuna – Libero; and Katy Verbeck – Super Sub!
The Lady Heralds travel to Rosary on Wednesday evening and then play in their Home Opener on Thursday night against El Modena. Remember it is a Black Out Thursday night!!
