The 2018-19 Whittier Christian High School Football team displayed a lot of heart in Friday night’s battle agains Vasquez High. Never giving up, despite a tremendous performance by Vasquez’s running back/quarterback/receiver/kicker Isaiah Calvin (6′, 200 lb.), the Heralds rallied as the game went on and actually outscored Vasquez in the second half.

Heralds defense closed up the middle and forced the Calvin to the outside where he did have some success before adjustments were made. Led by Senior Jacob Kaholokula who had 19 tackles (5 solo and 14 assisted), a tackle for loss and a blocked extra point, Herald’s defense pressured the quarterback, keeping the ball on the ground. Junior John Lopez contributed with 13 tackles (5 solo and 8 assisted) along with Senior Vincent Maughan who had 1 solo and 6 assisted tackles and a critical sack, Senior Wesley Ruiz who had 7 tackles (3 solo and 4 assisted), and Junior Tyler Juaregui who had 6 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Offensively, Herald’s Sophomore quarterback Aaron Rojas stepped in to an unfamiliar position and completed some critical passes for a total of 146 yards and 1 passing touchdown. Sophomore Captain Tyler Juaregui had a great running game with two rushing touchdowns as well as 49 receiving yards. Jake Sanchez scored a receiving touchdown as well as a 2 point conversion and junior Joseph Rivera had a good offensive performance with a few “catch and run” efforts totaling 65 yds.

Head Coach Brett Esslinger, in his first year at the helm said that the improvements from last week’s scrimmage were clear and impressive, and is excited to see how this team will continue to grow and improve!

The Heralds are working hard this week as they are back in action this coming week with their home opener against Mary Star.
