Wednesday December 6, 2017 saw WCHS boys soccer head over to San Pedro, CA for their fourth contest of the year against Mary Star of the Sea High School. Having played against each other a year ago, the two teams had some slight history and familiarity with each other.
Game time was set at 3:00pm at Daniels Field Park. The first 20 minutes of the game had both teams trying to figure each other out with Mary Star of the Sea High school having a slight advantage over WCHS with shots on goal and chances created. Their pressure resulted in a questionable penalty awarded to Mary Star off an infraction from one WCHS.
Going into half time 0:1 down & knowing they hadn’t played their best soccer of the day, the Herald boys knew they needed to dig deeper in order to give themselves a chance.
Second half was a complete turnaround for the Herald boys as the play and momentum switched in their favor. The team momentum picked up as senior Captain Aiden Suk and Junior Captain Joseph Chung started finding their groove in the middle of the pitch. About 12 minutes into the second half, Senior Captain Aiden Suk was able to get open in the eighteen yard box of Mary Star High school, and from two touches was able to settle and shoot to tie up the game 1:1. The goal seemed to have bouyed the team as now the boys were starting to ping passes and creating chances with Junior Caleb Fulbright and Freshman Ian Hawkes having better chances to create the lead that never materialized.
As the time was winding down, tensions wer high as both teams started going for the win. With less than 20 minutes left in the game, a little commotion created by the host team (Mary Star) saw one of their bench players receive a red card for infringing on to the field and pushing a WCHS player. The referees handled the situation well and had the game proceed on with Mary Star scoring a late goal to secure a 2:1 win over WCHS.
Tough loss, but overall the WHOLE team did well to have won the game. Next contest is a home game on Thursday December 7, 2017 at 3:15pm. Come support the boys as they take on John Glenn High school from Norwalk.
