Banged up and short handed the Heralds entered Wednesday night game in the La Habra Tournament looking to get back on track after losing the first game. With only 8 players suited and key members missing the Heralds would need a team effort to beat a scrappy Westminster Lions team.
The game started off slowly and the Heralds were forcing turnovers but not converting. A few minutes in leading scorer Chad picked up two early fouls and had to sit forcing Heralds to go to the bench early. Luckily his teammates picked up the slack and the Heralds put together a nice mix of outside shooting and aggressive drives to the basket, nailing two long distance 3s from Ryan H and going 5-6 from the line to race out to a 17-3 lead at the end of the 1st. The 2nd quarter was a reversal of fortunes as the Heralds went cold from the field only converting on two 3s and allowing 13 to Westminster for a 23-16 lead at halftime.
The 3rd quarter saw the Heralds offense get back on track with team total of 14 with Ryan H. scoring 8 in the quarter alone. But the Heralds defense couldn’t keep pace giving up 16 to narrow the lead down to just 5 heading into the final quarter. The 4th quarter was a frenzy of activity as neither team backed down. With some timely 3s from Chad and Ryan H. and a huge rebounding effort and 6 points in the quarter from Kolby, the Heralds were able to withstand a furious rally. With 13 seconds remaining and and the Heralds clinging to a 2 point lead the Lions were able to force a timely turnover to gain possession with the opportunity to either tie or take the lead. But with hounding defense from Blake and Noah up top, the Heralds forced the Lions into a tough shot and were able to secure the rebound to preserve the win and escape with a 2 point victory.
Ryan H. led all scorers with 20 off the bench hitting six 3s. Chad chipped in with 13 and Kolby had 6.
