Boys Junior Varsity Football, Boys Varsity Football · Brett Esslinger Announced As New Herald Head Football Coach!

Post for Social Media & Press Release:

Dear WCHS Football Players and Parents,

Thank you for your patience and your prayers during this time of transition.  I have been working with a selection committee that included representatives from administration, school board, and faculty. To avoid a conflict of interest, our Athletic Director, Rol Esslinger, recused himself from the selection committee.

We are excited to announce that Brett Esslinger will be our new head Varsity Football coach, effective immediately.

Coach Esslinger (WCHS 2008) played as Varsity quarterback during his high school career. After graduation, he attended Cal State Fullerton, where he earned his in Kinesiology. He is currently one semester away from finishing his M.A. in Secondary Education at Hope International University. He has been teaching here at WCHS for four years and coaching here for nine years. During that time, he has worked as JV Offensive Coordinator, JV Head Coach, Varsity Offensive Coordinator. He currently teaches Health and Weightlifting, and serves as an assistant ASB advisor. Coach Esslinger has a heart for building relationships and strives to build Christian character in his players. He is a Herald, and he understands our mission to equip the mind and spirit.

We are also excited to announce Mike Fitch as our new Varsity Assistant Head Coach. Coach Fitch has 33 years of head coaching experience, including Bellflower, Mayfair, Whittier, and Brethren Christian High School. His coaching career boasts two CIF Championships and fourteen League Championships. He was named Coach of the Year by Whittier Daily News, the Los Angeles Times, and the Long Beach Press Telegram. Twice he was selected as ABC Coach of the WeekIn 2010, Coach Fitch was inducted into the 605 Hall of Fame.

We eagerly anticipate that Coach Esslinger’s commitment to building a successful program and Coach Fitch’s proven track record will provide a winning combination for Heralds Football in the coming years.

Thank you for your support of the WCHS Football program.

Go Heralds!

Girls Varsity Softball · Jersey Retired for Former Herald Softball Pitcher Courtney McGee!

Mrs. Courtney (McGee) Rivera came to the Herald Softball Field on March 8, 2018, all the way from her home in Texas to be a part of a ceremony to retire her #14 jersey.  During her time as a Herald, Courtney was a dominant force on the softball field.  From her Sophomore year through Senior year, Courtney was a 1st Team All-League Selection.  Her Junior and Senior seasons she was selected as a 1st Team All-CIF Player.  But most importantly she helped the Heralds secure Back to Back CIF titles during her Junior and Senior Seasons (’09, ’10).

Some of her stats from High School:

Pitching ERA:

2008 –  1.22

2009 –  .061

2010 –  .045

Batting Average:

Averaged .406 for her 3 combined seasons.

2008  –  449

2009  –  343

2010  –  427

Fielding Percentage:

.976 Avg. for her 3 combined seasons

2008  –  .987

2009  –  .955

2010  –  .987

In College, Courtney was a part of the Lubbock Christian University team that won the conference championship in all four seasons that she participated.  During her Sophomore season, her team won the state championship and she was voted 1st Team all conference.  Her junior season they improved to take 3rd Place in the nation and she was selected all tournament in the National Championship Tournament.  Her senior year she was selected as the Surgical Comeback Player of the year as she wrapped up her college career.

Courtney has certainly made a significant contribution to the legacy of Heralds softball and we are proud to honor her in this way!  Here are some pictures of her day on our campus.

Boys Varsity Football · Class Act by Maranatha to honor a fallen Herald

BELIEVE IT OR NOT…sometimes there are more important things than football.  The Whittier Christian Football community would like to thank Maranatha for what they did before last Friday’s game (October 20, 2017) to honor the memory of Ethan Hawks.  Ethan was tragically killed in a car incident on the 57 freeway last November, and this season has been hard not seeing #75 out on the field for his senior year.

In Ethan’s sophomore season, he had a horrific knee injury on the Maranatha field.  Most people thought he might never play sports again…BUT NOT ETHAN!  Not only did he play again…he was a starter on the defensive line on opening day of his junior season… just 10 months later!  Ethan had a determination and spirit that was hard to believe!

The Maranatha football community came around Ethan after his knee injury…with many of their staff even visiting Ethan in the hospital up in Pasadena.  The support from Maranatha continued after Ethan’s tragic death, as many members of Minutemen team and staff came to his memorial service in the Herald gymnasium.  Head Coach Steve Bogan brought the Maranatha players in their football jerseys to support Ethan’s family (along with many other local football teams and coaches).

This past Friday night, right after the pre-game coin toss, Maranatha presented Ethan’s father Steve Hawks with a beautiful framed commemorative #75 jersey.  See the pictures below.

The Heralds would like to thank the Maranatha staff for the honor and respect they bestowed on the Hawks family.  Special thanks to Dr. Steve Sherman, John Rouse, Sammy Skinner, Eddie Arnett, Kelly Wierema, and Coach Steve Bogan for their thoughtfulness.  Your kind act to the Hawks family will not soon be forgotten.
