Heralds News · WC Girls Basketball Beats Ontario Christian to Take OCHS Knight Time Classic Championship

In a tense back and forth game, the Lady Heralds clinched the championship game of the Knight Time Classic for the 2nd time in three years with a 65-60 victory over host Ontario Christian.

After leading the entire first half, the Heralds fell behind 31-30 on two free throws by the Knights with less then 7 seconds in the half. Junior guard Emma Eaton drilled a three pointer as the 2nd quarter ended to give Whittier Christian a 2 point lead at half. At the end of the 3rd quarter senior Skylar Sherfey got an offensive rebound and scored a bucket as the buzzer sounded to give the Heralds a 48-44 lead going into the final stanza.

Senior Shelly Vasquez drilled 4 clutch three pointers on 4 attempts throughout the game with the biggest one coming with the scored tied to give Heralds a 60-57 lead with 1:40 to play. After an Ontario Christian field goal to pull within one, senior Amaya Norris drilled 2 free throws to increase the lead to 62-59. After Norris stole the ball on Ontario’s next possession, Skylar Sherfey made one of 2 free throws to put the Heralds up 63-59. After the Knights made the first of two free throws to make it 63-60, sophomore Aidan Sherfey grabbed the missed free throw and went to the other end and calmly sank both free throws putting WC up by 5.

All tournament Skylar Sherfey stole the ensuing inbound pass with 7 seconds left to seal the victory. Skylar finished the game with 5 steals (team high), 6 rebounds and 9 points.
