Post for Social Media & Press Release:
Dear WCHS Football Players and Parents,
Thank you for your patience and your prayers during this time of transition. I have been working with a selection committee that included representatives from administration, school board, and faculty. To avoid a conflict of interest, our Athletic Director, Rol Esslinger, recused himself from the selection committee.
We are excited to announce that Brett Esslinger will be our new head Varsity Football coach, effective immediately.
Coach Esslinger (WCHS 2008) played as Varsity quarterback during his high school career. After graduation, he attended Cal State Fullerton, where he earned his B.S.degree in Kinesiology. He is currently one semester away from finishing his M.A. in Secondary Education at Hope International University. He has been teaching here at WCHS for four years and coaching here for nine years. During that time, he has worked as JV Offensive Coordinator, JV Head Coach, Varsity Offensive Coordinator. He currently teaches Health and Weightlifting, and serves as an assistant ASB advisor. Coach Esslinger has a heart for building relationships and strives to build Christian character in his players. He is a Herald, and he understands our mission to equip the mind and spirit.
We are also excited to announce Mike Fitch as our new Varsity Assistant Head Coach. Coach Fitch has 33 years of head coaching experience, including Bellflower, Mayfair, Whittier, and Brethren Christian High School. His coaching career boasts two CIF Championships and fourteen League Championships. He was named Coach of the Year by Whittier Daily News, the Los Angeles Times, and the Long Beach Press Telegram. Twice he was selected as ABC Coach of the Week. In 2010, Coach Fitch was inducted into the 605 Hall of Fame.
We eagerly anticipate that Coach Esslinger’s commitment to building a successful program and Coach Fitch’s proven track record will provide a winning combination for Heralds Football in the coming years.
Thank you for your support of the WCHS Football program.
Carl Martinez, Head of School
