Boys Varsity Soccer · Herald Boys Varsity Soccer with Convincing Win over Heritage Christian!

Thursday January 11, 2018 was a match up between the host, WCHS boys soccer varsity team versus the visitors from Northridge, CA in Heritage High School. Both teams came in in need of a win after losing their first league games this past Tuesday. Urgency and desperation would best describe the opening few minutes of the game as both teams fought hard to try and establish their style of play in the game. Early on in the game, both teams had good chances that were equally saved by their respective goal keepers.
A third in to the first half of the game, the hosts WCHS found the back of the net when a long throw in from senior defender Matthew Duran was controlled brilliantly by junior midfielder Caleb Fulbright who went ahead and shot the ball in to the net for his first goal of the young league season. The goal seemed to have calmed nerves for the home team as they now settled in and started creating better goal scoring opportunities. The home teams persistence paid of as freshman midfielder Ben Bonilla was fortunate to receive a long over the top pass from junior Caleb Fulbright to which he controlled and right at the eighteen yard box was able to slot the ball in for his second goal of league play and first of the game. The game evened out in terms of possession play in the last 10 minutes of the first half as the hosts managed to hold on to a 2 – 0 lead at half time stoppage.
At the start of the second half, the hosts started off with great urgency as they looked to put away the game. Central midfield dominance led by junior captain Joseph Chung and senior captain Aiden Suk seemed to have been the catalyst of most of the goal scoring chances created. Minutes into the second half saw a WCHS soccer player fouled about 25 yards from the opponents goal. Sophomore defender Aaron Hernandez stepped up and converted a great free kick that caught the opponents goal keeper by surprise to make the score 3 – 0.With a good lead to play with, the hosts managed to start playing more freer with better passes and improved communication being established. This allowed for junior Caleb Fulbright to deliver a cross from a tight ankle on the right side of the field to junior Isaac Williams who got on the score sheet for his first goal of the season.
Halfway through the second half and the score at 4 – 0, the host team was able to sub in players who had fresher legs to try close out the game. An opportunity was created for freshman Will Thomas who was able to get on the score sheet by slotting in his first goal of the season to make the final score 5 – 0 in favor of WCHS. Junior goal keeper Elijah Camarena had a solid game and with the help of the back line consisting of freshman Brandon Friesch, junior Kai Barboza, senior Matthew Duran and sophomore Aaron Hernandez, they were able to keep a clean sheet.
Next game will be Tuesday 1/16/2018 in Cerritos, CA against Valley Christian High School. Come support!
